The 2015-2016 budget presented by the Government of Alberta on March 26 includes $78 million for AEMERA for its first full year of operations as an arm’s length agency to government.
The $78 million budget is comprised of $50 million in funding collected from industry under the Oil Sands Environmental Monitoring Program Regulation, and a $28 million allocation from Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development.
In the coming year, AEMERA’s primary focus will be on environmental monitoring, evaluation and reporting in the oil sands and Lower Athabasca Region.
AEMERA will also continue with current environmental monitoring activities in other areas of the province, and will work to improve scientific oversight and public reporting on those activities.
Moving forward, working with stakeholders, AEMERA will develop plans and sustainable funding options for environmental monitoring, evaluation and reporting in the other six regions of the province to support the regional land use plans, and better meet the policy and decision-making needs in each of those regions.
In the coming weeks, AEMERA will release a 2015-2018 Business Plan, outlining its specific goals, activities and accountabilities, and a detailed budget.
